Jesse and Lauren wanted to improve how they experienced their backyard by transforming their aging, partially covered deck into a more functional and comfortable outdoor living space. Their existing treated wood deck had served its purpose, but it no longer matched their vision for low-maintenance living or year-round usability.
Their goal was to create a screened porch that felt open and connected to the surrounding landscape while offering protection from weather, insects, and seasonal limitations. They also wanted the new space to feel like a natural extension of their home rather than a separate outdoor structure.
The Challenge: Replacing an Aging Deck While Improving Function and Comfort
The original deck presented both structural and lifestyle limitations. While it provided usable outdoor space, it required ongoing maintenance and lacked protection from weather and insects, limiting how often it could be enjoyed throughout the year.

The Solution: A Screened Porch Designed for Year-Round Enjoyment
The design process focused on preserving the existing deck footprint while upgrading nearly every functional and material aspect of the space. Jesse and Lauren worked closely with the Custom Built team to select finishes and features that would support both durability and comfort.
Key design decisions included:
- Trex Transcend Havana Gold Decking: Selected for its low-maintenance performance and warm, natural aesthetic.
- Screened Wall Enclosure: Added to provide insect protection while maintaining airflow and outdoor connection.
- Ceiling Fan Integration: Installed to improve comfort and air circulation during warmer months.
- Covered Roof Design Coordination: Aligned with existing rooflines to ensure a seamless architectural transition.
- Existing Footprint Preservation: Maintained the original deck layout to maximize efficiency and reduce structural disruption.
During construction, the project required careful coordination with an external roofing contractor to ensure the roof integration aligned properly with the screened structure. Weather delays also required adjustments to scheduling, but the team maintained momentum to keep the project moving forward.
The completed screened porch now functions as a comfortable, low-maintenance outdoor retreat that allows Jesse and Lauren to enjoy their backyard more frequently throughout the year, regardless of weather or seasonal conditions.
