Remodeling Project Overview:
Project Date: November, 2024
Service Provided: Four Seasons Room Addition
Location: Holt, Michigan (near Kiwanis Park)
Beth’s home in Holt sits in a quiet, established area near Kiwanis Park, where homeowners value both comfort and connection to the outdoors. While the existing deck once served a purpose, it no longer supported how she wanted to use the space throughout Michigan’s changing seasons.
Working with Custom Built Design & Remodeling, Beth set out to reimagine the area as a bright, year-round four seasons room that would feel like a natural extension of her home. The goal was to create a light-filled retreat where she could relax, read, work from home, and enjoy the outdoors in comfort, regardless of weather.
The Challenge: Transforming an Unused Deck Into Functional Living Space
The original deck created several functional and comfort-related issues that limited how often the space was actually used. The painted surfaces required ongoing maintenance, summer heat made the area uncomfortable, and the overall space felt disconnected from the rest of the home.
Beyond simply replacing the deck, Beth wanted the new addition to feel fully integrated architecturally and visually with the existing home. Several important priorities helped guide the remodeling project:
- Year-Round Comfort: Create a fully enclosed living space that remained comfortable during every season.
- Seamless Interior Integration: Match flooring, trim work, and finishes so the addition felt original to the home.
- Increased Natural Light: Design a bright, open space that maximized sunlight without sacrificing privacy.
- Flexible Living Functionality: Incorporate doors and layout features that supported both quiet daily use and larger family gatherings.
- Architectural Consistency: Maintain visual harmony with the home’s existing structure and exterior appearance.
The goal was to transform the underused outdoor area into a warm, functional retreat that enhanced both everyday living and long-term home value.
The Solution: A Bright, Comfortable Four Seasons Room Designed for Everyday Living
Working closely with Lead Designer Christine Gauthier, the Custom Built team developed a four seasons room addition that blended comfort, functionality, and architectural detail. Every design decision focused on making the new space feel cohesive with the original home while maximizing natural light and usability.
To create the peaceful retreat Beth envisioned, the addition incorporated several customized features throughout the space:
- Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring Extension: Continued the home’s existing flooring into the addition for a seamless transition.
- Vaulted Ceiling with Hand-Cut Rafters: Created a more open, airy feel while maximizing natural light throughout the room.
- Interior French Doors: Allowed flexibility between open entertaining space and private daily use.
- Flush Fireplace with Custom Surround: Established a warm focal point that made the room comfortable year-round.
- Transom Window Integration: Added additional sunlight while preserving privacy inside the home.
Throughout construction, the team carefully navigated several structural and site-specific challenges, including HVAC routing, gas line installation, setback limitations, and existing window placement constraints. Each adjustment was handled while maintaining the integrity of both the design vision and the existing home.
The final result is a bright, inviting four seasons room that feels fully connected to the rest of the home. What was once an aging, underused deck has been transformed into one of the most comfortable and frequently used spaces in the house, a quiet retreat designed specifically around how Beth lives every day.
"Highly professional, timely, honest and forth right. I knew they wouldn’t be the least expensive option but I also knew what I was paying for and I wanted quality professional and trustworthy work over less expensive. I appreciate their approach because it doesn’t waste your time if your budget doesn’t align with the cost." - Elizabeth Read
