Remodeling Project Overview:
Project Date: June, 2025
Service Provided: Full Kitchen Remodeling and Main Level Reconfiguration
Location: Mason, Michigan (near Dobie Lake)
Mary and her husband loved their home in Mason, Michigan, near Dobie Lake, but the kitchen and surrounding main level spaces no longer functioned well for how they lived day to day. While the home fit comfortably within the quiet residential character of the Alaiedon Township area and offered a location close to the lake, the interior layout had become inefficient and disconnected from modern family routines.
What should have been the central gathering space instead felt segmented and difficult to navigate. The kitchen island restricted movement through the main traffic paths, key appliances were not ideally placed for everyday use or entertaining, and supporting spaces like the mudroom and half-bath were not integrated to support the flow of daily life.
The Challenge: Improving Flow, Storage, and Functional Layout
The existing home layout created a series of friction points that affected daily routines and overall usability. While the home had strong character and generous ceiling height, several key design decisions limited how efficiently the space functioned.
The goal of the remodel was not only to modernize the kitchen but to correct underlying layout inefficiencies that impacted movement, storage, and usability across the entire main level.
- Island Traffic Flow: The kitchen island created pinch points that restricted movement between key work zones.
- Refrigerator Accessibility: The refrigerator placement made it difficult to access comfortably during gatherings.
- Inefficient Room Placement: The pantry and half-bath were positioned in ways that disrupted natural circulation.
- Underutilized Vertical Space: Tall ceilings lacked functional storage integration or visual balance.
The Solution: A Reconfigured Kitchen Designed for Flow and Function
Working closely with designer Dianna Corsi, the Custom Built team restructured the main level to eliminate inefficiencies and improve day-to-day usability. The design focused on clearer circulation paths, smarter storage integration, and a warmer material palette that unified the space.
- Island Redesign for Improved Flow: The kitchen island was reshaped and updated with quartz countertops and warm wood accents to eliminate pinch points and improve circulation.
- Relocated Half-Bath for Better Layout Efficiency: The powder room was repositioned to improve privacy and free up surrounding space.
- Vertical Storage Expansion: Tall wall cabinetry was added to fully utilize ceiling height and increase storage capacity.
- Pocket Door Appliance Integration: Frequently used appliances were concealed to maintain a clean, functional aesthetic.
During construction, the team addressed necessary mechanical and finish adjustments, including HVAC coordination, flooring consistency updates, and precise installation of integrated storage and door systems.
The completed space now functions as a cohesive, highly usable main level that improves flow, increases storage capacity, and better supports both everyday living and entertaining.
