A few years ago, we had the opportunity to help John and Hannah transform the kitchen inside their historic 1880 farmhouse located along the Holt Road corridor between Mason and Holt, Michigan. Situated next to their family orchard, the property carried generations of character and history that the couple wanted to preserve throughout the renovation. While they loved the home's charm, the existing kitchen layout no longer supported the way they wanted to cook, gather, and host family.
Like many older rural farmhouses throughout the Mason area, the home featured small enclosed rooms, awkward transitions, and aging structural conditions that limited functionality. John and Hannah wanted a brighter, more open kitchen that maintained the farmhouse’s original personality while creating a warm, welcoming guest residence built for modern everyday living.
The Challenge: Modernizing a Historic Farmhouse Kitchen Without Losing Its Character
For John and Hannah, preserving the identity of the 1880 farmhouse was just as important as improving functionality. The existing kitchen layout felt cramped and inefficient, with the typical closed-off room arrangement common in older rural homes throughout Michigan.
Beyond the cosmetic updates, the project required careful structural planning to address larger challenges throughout the home that directly impacted the kitchen renovation:
- An awkward bi-level entry configuration
- Limited flow between living spaces
- Structural integration with a future home addition
Because of the home's age, the project also required extensive coordination to navigate hidden framing conditions, aging materials, and nonstandard construction methods commonly found in historic farmhouses.

Working collaboratively through the design-build process, our team helped John and Hannah reimagine the kitchen as part of a larger whole-home transformation focused on openness, warmth, and improved functionality.
To create the bright, welcoming modern farmhouse aesthetic the homeowners envisioned, we incorporated carefully selected design and construction details throughout the remodel:

- Improved Structural Flow: Relocated the original entry sequence to eliminate awkward transitions and improve movement throughout the home.
Today, the remodeled farmhouse kitchen serves as a bright, functional centerpiece within a fully revitalized guest residence, allowing John and Hannah to comfortably welcome family while preserving the history and character that made the property special in the first place.
