Remodeling Project Overview:
Project Date: October, 2024
Service Provided: Main Floor Bathroom Remodeling
Location: Riverside Park Neighborhood, Lansing, Michigan
After living in their Lansing home for years, Kate and Brent were ready to improve one of the most outdated and frustrating spaces in the house: the main floor bathroom. While the home had been well maintained over the years, the existing bathroom layout felt cramped, inefficient, and disconnected from how the couple actually lived day to day.
Working with the Custom Built Design & Remodeling team, the homeowners wanted to create a bathroom that felt brighter, more functional, and visually personalized while still fitting naturally within the character of their longtime Lansing home.
The Challenge: Improving Functionality Within a Small Bathroom Footprint
The original bathroom suffered from several layout and usability issues common in older homes. The shower felt tight and awkward to use, the outlet placement was inconvenient, and the overall room lacked both storage and visual warmth.
The homeowners also wanted the remodel to feel more intentional and customized rather than simply replacing outdated finishes. Several important goals guided the project:
- Improved Shower Layout: Create a more comfortable and functional bathing space.
- Better Electrical Placement: Rework outlet locations to improve everyday usability.
- Custom Storage Solutions: Incorporate vanities and storage that maximized the smaller footprint.
- Personalized Design Features: Blend neutral finishes with colorful accents that reflected the homeowners’ personality.
The goal was to transform the bathroom into a space that balanced practicality, comfort, and visual character without compromising the home’s original charm.
The Solution: A Bright, Functional Bathroom Designed Around Everyday Use
The remodeling process began with a complete rethinking of the bathroom’s layout and functionality. Working closely with Advisor Sara Majeske and the Custom Built production team, Kate and Brent carefully selected finishes and design details that helped the smaller space feel brighter, more organized, and more visually engaging.
To create the whimsical yet timeless atmosphere the homeowners envisioned, the remodel incorporated several customized design elements throughout the bathroom:
- Colorful Stone Niche: A bold accent feature that introduced personality and visual contrast within the shower.
- Custom Vanity Installation: Improved storage and functionality while maximizing usable space.
- Neutral Tile Selections: Helped brighten the room and create a clean, timeless foundation.
- Strategic Outlet Placement: Improved convenience and supported the homeowners’ daily routines.
Throughout construction, the team carefully protected the home using Zipwalls and floor coverings while minimizing disruption to the homeowners’ daily lives. Unexpected issues, including a leaking glass block window, were quickly addressed with updated tile work and corrective solutions to maintain both durability and appearance.
The final result is a bathroom that feels significantly more open, functional, and personalized while still fitting seamlessly within the character of the original Lansing home.
