Purposeful, Versatile, and Community-Focused

Dream

A Family-Oriented Revitalization Years in the Making

Building Twentyone had been on a journey for seven years. Seven years ago, a fire swept through their space just as they were beginning to expand a skate park. The original sign was plucked from the building as flames consumed it, leaving a charred memory of what once was. Yet, from that devastation, a vision emerged: to create a modern, engaging teen center that could serve as a safe, welcoming, and dynamic space for the community up to age 21.

Ben and his wife spearheaded the project, leaning into their love of community, faith, and family. They dreamed of a space where students could build skills, connect with peers, and explore activities from American Ninja Warrior courses and rock climbing to art, podcasting, and videography. It needed to be fun, flexible, and affordable, with a focus on fostering meaningful relationships. The goal was to honor the building’s past while designing something innovative, inclusive, and enduring.

Design

The project’s design process was a family effort. Ben’s wife led the interior design, incorporating intentional touches that reflected the mission of Building Twentyone: signs with playful mantras like “All disputes handled by rock, paper, scissors,” named rooms like the Family Room and the Nook, and an industrial yet welcoming aesthetic with exposed HVAC and metal rafters softened by thoughtful finishes.

Custom Built contributed to the cafe area, working closely with Ben and his wife to capture the Old World Americana feel they envisioned. Every detail in the cafe (materials, finishes, and layout)  was selected to support student use and community events. While our team focused on this portion, the larger remodel included classrooms, the American Ninja Warrior course, and multipurpose rooms designed to foster creativity, physical activity, and connection.

Build

Construction of the cafe required adapting to the building’s unique conditions, including exposed ductwork and industrial framing. The team ensured the space was welcoming, functional, and durable for high traffic and varied uses.

The broader Building Twentyone remodel culminated in October 2025, coinciding with the seven-year anniversary of the fire—a milestone that brought the community together for an open house. Kids and families explored the American Ninja Warrior course, participated in classes, and discovered the newly designed activity rooms. Custom touches throughout the center, from playful signage to flexible classroom setups, made the space inviting and safe for students.

With scholarships, affordable memberships, and thoughtfully designed spaces, Building Twentyone now serves as a modern, vibrant teen center. Our work on the cafe contributed to the overall vision, providing a welcoming hub where students can gather, recharge, and connect, while the larger remodel ensures the center remains relevant, engaging, and sustainable for years to come.
